Here is what you need to know about LS power steering pumps when building your swap. You must match the belt spacing of your pump to the rest of your accessory drive (e.g., your crank pulley spacing).
We categorize the belt spacings for LS power steering pumps into the same dash-number system as our accessory brackets:
Each pump uses a unique pulley that does not interchange. Using a pulley from a different pump, almost always causes belt alignment issues. Do not swap other GM pulleys onto these pumps because offsets and spacing will not match.
There are two main pump styles: the older Saginaw pump (originating from the 1960s) and the Type 2 pump. Early Saginaw pumps used 3/8"-16 bolts, while LS-era Saginaw pumps used M10 -1.5 threaded bolts. Their flow rates and pressure output are quite different but can be changed by replacing the flow control valve where the high pressure line enters the pump body. If you replace your LS truck Saginaw pump with an aftermarket pump, then typically the reservoirs are clocked slightly different which can cause bracket issues such as the rear bolt holes being slightly mismatched and can tilt the reservoir cap into a bracket making the cap hard to remove.
All mounting holes of each pump design may look similar but due to pump shaft offset and diameter differences this makes the brackets specific to each pump model. Therefore matching your exact pump with the correct ICT bracket is a must.
Some Type 2 pumps, such as the Corvette pump, require a remote reservoir that mounts to the fender or engine. This can add clutter, so we recommend to use a pump with an attached reservoir, such as the Camaro or Jones pumps.
LS pumps came in two shaft diameters: .664" and .750" inches. All pulleys are pressed on the shaft with no keyway and no retaining bolt. The threads inside the shaft are only for the pulley installer tool. Most modern pumps use M8-1.25 for this thread.
We make a ton of bracket options for all these pumps, so if you are having trouble finding the exact one for your build then give us a call and we would love to help!
We offer adapters that convert your high and low pressure lines to -6AN for a cleaner setup. We stock universal high pressure hoses and our low pressure hose barb adapter that converts the reservoir hose barb outlet fitting to -6AN ICT# F06AN375CP. We also offer a universal low pressure hose kit is 551082-PLPH and our steering box 6AN fitting kit 551082-FIT01.
